The importance of women’s role in peace building and conflict mitigation processes

Women Empowerment Organization in cooperation with UNIFEM launched a program for enhancing women’s role in peace building and conflict mitigation processes in the tension areas belonging to Kirkuk and Mousel provinces. The situation in Kirkuk and Mousel is very complex due to the various nations and groups struggling to gain power and make their dominance felt. In Kirkuk, Kurds are more in clashes with Turkmen than with Arabs. Moreover, there are internal and external factors which encourage and speed up the strife between Kurds, Arabs and Turkmen.

This program brought into view the women role in resolving these conflicts and to what extent women in the new Iraq can have such an ability to lead the conflict mitigation processes.
